HANNAH SERNA’S STORY: Told by her mother Heidi
In January we discovered Hannah has scoliosis with a 54 degree curve in her spine. In March, after CT and MRI we were told that she has Chiari Malformation Type 1 along with syringomyelia the full length of her spine. This is basically a cyst throughout the center of her spine. She had Chiari decompression 2 weeks later. Then, 2 weeks post op she began having fevers and searing pain in her legs. She spent a total of 2 weeks in the hospital in April for Aseptic Meningitis. After several doses of steroids she seemed to be doing better. At the end of May we took her to the hospital again as she had a few seizures. She was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and had to have an EVD placed to drain the fluid from her brain. They released her mid-June only to come back 2 days later with Bacterial Meningitis and after a few more seizures still had hydrocephalus. We had to wait until all of the bacteria was gone from her system to have an internal shunt placed. The shunt was placed at the end of June and she was sent home July 2nd. After several blood and CSF tests, it was determined that an autoimmune disorder could have possibly caused most of the post-op issues.

RYLEE CASE’S STORY:
Rylee is 14 years old and has unexplained episodes where her throat closes and she cannot breath. She goes into anaphylaxis ( life-threatening allergic reaction) sometimes 3 times a week. The reason for these episodes has not been found, yet doctors suspect that it has to do with something more than her severe nut and watermelon allergies. She is being treated at the Mayo Clinic, but no diagnosis has been made as of yet.
Rylee is a tough cookie and is very positive, yet it is a terrifying experience to stop breathing. She is scared to sleep, touch anything, or be without her parents. At 14 she can’t go to friends houses or be alone, which makes it really hard to lead a normal teenage life. Rylee’s mother quit her job to work at Rylee’s school, having to take a 50% pay decrease to do so. Chad has to be careful not to travel too far as he is called to the hospital on a regular basis.
